I know, I know, I always wear black. I can't help it, it's in my New York DNA. But it's June and my French genes are ready for gingham -- one of my favorite wardrobe flourishes. Here's a little sampler of delicious goodies from my latest wish list...and it's my birthday next week -- in case you need any inspiration!
I grew up with my mother carrying on the French tradition of glamorous chic, with well defined eyes. As soon as I was old enough --I think 15 or 16 -- I learned how to use Indian Kohl from my friend Coralie and it seemed very exotic and cool. I used it for quite some time and while it made a nice outline, Kohl was also a little messy and it wasn't easy to keep the tip fine enough.
So I moved on to various brands of more practical eye pencils, crayons, liquid liners, and more recently, paint on liners. The problem was, every single one of those products would migrate below my eyes not long after their application. Not glamorous at all to have all that smokiness looking like circles under my eyes.
Tired of carrying on the nerd tradition of Racoon Chic, I decided to try Bobbi Brown's Long-Wear Gel liner. I'll admit I was skeptical at first and assumed it would behave just like all of the other liners I'd used.
Right away, I liked the way this product behaved: Using a fine make-up brush, I found it was easy to apply and created a smooth and even line.
I like to soften the line by smudging it a little with a finger tip...but do it promptly before it sets.
But the real shocker was this eyeliner really delivered on its promise and the outlined lasted for several hours. This is a first in my experience.
I'm completely won over.
I bought my first tub last December and just replaced it last week -- so this item will last many, many m0nths if you remember to replace the cap tightly so the gel doesn't dry out.
Note: It's definitely worth investing in a good brush and cleaning it with soap and water after each use. I use paintbrushes all the time in my work, so that was fine with me here but may not be quite so user-friendly for everyone.

On the way to lunch in Saint Germain, I took a little detour on the rue du Sabot for sentimental reasons and passed by a pretty window display of elegant goodies. My shoe radar registered a pair of especially fabulous Robert Clergerie shoes as I wandered by. I kept walking until I realized I'd seen the price discretly listed beside them. Wait! Did I just read they were 67 Euros??
I retraced my steps and checked again. Yes, 67 Euros. Given that they looked new, I went inside the cozy space. Unlike most Parisian shops, the sales girls left me alone -- actually they completely ignored me-- but I was relieved to be left on my own to explore the perfect, uncluttered racks, arranged by color and size.
It is a re-sale shop with beautifully edited pieces and stunningly reasonable prices. The brands range from Alberta Ferretti to Zara -- but are united by being wearable, memorable and effortessly sylish.
Turns out the shoes in question were not my size but among the notable offerings spotted that day were a mint pair of 2-tone Prada ballet flats and a Lanvin 2009 black silk shift -- in fact, there was a rack set aside filled with a score of chic "little black dresses" along with soft rainbow of cashmere cardigans in muted tones of violet, blue and camel.This is the kind of place that you need to visit regularly in order to find the treasure of the day in your size...guess I need to move to Paris!
In the next room there was an equally curated selection of interesting books, ceramic tabletop and furniture and I made a mental note to consider it as a good source for a special thank you gift.
Be forwarned, the hours here are a little irregular and they seem to open later than expected and close early so you're best bet is to check them out in the afternoon!
